Speakers in the News: Andrew Smithers

By

In a recent opinion piece in Financial News, Andrew Smithers criticizes the U.S. Federal Reserve and says that private sector debt is a long-term problem that poses a serious threat to the world economy.

Smithers, chairman of Smithers & Co and speaker at the 64th CFA Institute Annual Conference, notes that although it is important to delay the next recession to allow personal, corporate, and government debt to reach equilibrium, “this could take some time and will require international foreign exchange co-operation, which is so far absent, as well as political decisions unlikely to win votes.”

Read more of his thoughts on the best ways to achieve this equilibrium, and find out what policies he thinks can encourage a reduction in private sector debt at the Smithers & Co. website.
